Record-setting parades
Pride parades set records in Cleveland and Columbus this year for the number of participants.
Below are parade counts for this year and the past dozen years in both cities, made by a Gay People?s Chronicle reporter with a hand counter.
The parade count is different from the larger festival count provided by Pride organizers. It includes only people in the parade, not those who go directly to the festival. Years with low numbers are often ones with rain or extreme heat.
The Columbus parade is counted on High Street as it crosses a bridge over railroad tracks between Nationwide Plaza and the convention center. Cleveland parades are counted on an East Ninth Street bridge over tracks just south of the Shoreway. From 2000 to 2004, the Cleveland count was done at Playhouse Square, in front of the Palace Theater; 1994 and 1995 marches to Public Square were counted at East Ninth and Euclid.
Everyone passing the counter, on foot, on a float, in a vehicle or in a baby stroller is counted. The count begins with the police car leading the parade and ends with the one bringing up the rear--sometimes this is a van picking up people who wish to ride the rest of the way.
